Quilt Museum Chiefland, Florida

The Levy County Quilt Museum is located a few miles east out of town in a beautiful log cabin with an expansive front porch that sometimes hosts performances by local musicians. The huge porch offers several swings and rocking chairs providing an inviting place to sit outside and enjoy the countryside. The yard and driveway offers plenty of parking, including room for larger RVs.

The museum displays many unique quilts, some of them antiques, and numerous antique quilting machines, some more than a hundred years old. I was shown one antique machine that was the state of the art in 1925 and sold for $250. For anyone who is curious about the quilting craft, there usually is a quilt or two being worked on by one or more of the ladies of the guild. The ladies also act as docents for a tour of the museum and its quilting artifacts.

Quilt and Gift Shop

While named a museum, the log cabin is also a quilt shop, with loads of fabrics and quilting supplies. In addition, the shop is a general crafting boutique offering many types of fiber arts and hand-crafted items, all created by artisans in the community. The museum is a great place to shop for a unique hand-crafted gift for someone special and made even more unique because it was created by a local artisan, not imported from China.

As my wife is a quilter, visiting the museum is a requirement every time we are in Chiefland, Florida. She always enjoys visiting with the ladies in the Levy County Quilt Guild who are the volunteers who manage the museum and store. She can’t leave without going browsing through their fabric collection looking for good deals and the right piece of fabric she might need for a project. And rarely does she leave empty-handed.

While my wife is tootling around in the fabric and supply collections, I enjoy browsing around the shop looking at the antiques and different crafted items. If it is a pleasant afternoon I’ll sit on one of the porch swings and enjoy the view and fresh air.
