Top Mississippi-Alabama-Florida Gulf Shore RV Parks & Campgrounds

We’ve traveled extensively along the Gulf Coast from the Mississippi-Louisiana State line through Alabama and along Florida’s Gulf Coast as far South as Crystal River, Florida. While there are lots of public and private camping and RV parks along the route, many we avoid because of premium prices or the need to make advance reservations six to twelve months ahead of our trip. Below we highlight some of our favorites.

Best Upper Mississippi Great River Road RV Park & Campgrounds

Grant River Campground, Potosi, Wisconsin

We think the most scenic section of the 3000 mile long network of the National Scenic Great River Road is from the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities region to Prescott, Wisconsin. Significant portions of the road run adjacent and in view of the river. Much of this route runs through the glacial driftless area of high bluffs that define the river valley. For more detail, see our Great River Road travelogue

Below are links to profiles of the top RV campgrounds along the Great River Road, ones that offer scenic views, decent sites for RV campers, modern washroom facilities, hiking trails and other attractions appealing to travelers (vs long stay parks).

Arkansas Scenic Highway 7

From Harrison, Arkansas to South of Hot Springs, scenic highway 7 offers attractive scenic lookouts, some excellent camping, great hiking trails, unique towns and loads of outdoor recreational opportunities.

One of our favorite stops to spend a few days is in Hot Springs Arkansas and the National Park Gulpha Gorge Campground. One special feature, among many, of the campground is it is First-Come, First-Served. This means you don’t have to plan months in advance to secure a reservation and have a decent chance of getting a vacant site if you travel itinerary isn’t locked in.

Should your destination be Hot Springs National Park and it’s attractions, there are a several private campgrounds in the area. Several other National Forest camping options are available on nearby Lake Ouachita.
