Best Restaurants in Cedar Key, Florida

Located in the Dock Street dining and shopping district, the Big Deck Raw Bar overlooks the inner harbor vs. its neighbors across the street who look out on the Gulf. If you are visiting Cedar Key and you have Covid-19 concerns and want a brew or something to eat, the Big Deck Raw Bar offers the greatest number of open-air seating on the Island.

The pub has both an outdoor patio and a covered dining deck with a combination of plexiglass and open windows. It offers a comfortable, laid-back atmosphere in a casual setting with of formica-topped tables and metal chairs. Service is informal with plastic plates, cups and utensils. On weekends and other occasions they will have musical entertainment setup in the corner of the deck.

The menu is “basic burger and raw bar” with a few specials; we chose one of the specials – a Grouper Sandwich basket. They offered 6 brews on tap; our choice was their vanilla porter.

Grouper Fish Basket Big Deck BarNGrill Cedar Key, Florida

Our Grouper Sandwich was very tasty. Served open-faced on a large bun with leaf lettuce, onion and tomato. A large serving of fish; quite filling. Never having grouper before we didn’t know how “fishy” it would taste. We were pleasantly surprised; not a fishy or strong taste at all; quite mild like our usual favorite: Mahi-Mahi. The basket included a small serving of cole slaw, which while quite modest had a nice tangy taste. Jo’s dinner version of the Grouper included a large serving of curly fries.

We didn’t have to wait long for our food to be served and it came nice and hot; wait service in general was friendly and attentive.

We give the Big Deck 3.5 – 4 stars. Service good; decent food quality but not tops among places we’ve dined at in Cedar Keys and not as extensive a menu. Comfortable informal atmosphere but less attractive than those across the street that front on the gulf. If you are on a “budget” you’ll save a few dollars here vs. the other restaurants along Dock Street.

PS. If on our next visit to Cedar Key and Covid-19 remains an issue, I suspect the Big Deck is going to get more of our business than previously! 🙂
